Signs and Symptoms of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can occur at any age. Common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty hearing conversations in noise
  • Requesting frequent repetitions
  • Ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear
  • Not understanding soft speech
  • Family members reporting misunderstandings
  • History of hearing loss in your family

Recent analysis of hearing aid outcome studies report improved quality of life for those who wear hearing aids when compared to those who choose not to wear aids. Straining to hear will increase stress levels and can cause conflicts due to misunderstandings. Wearing hearing aids is a powerful statement to friends and family that you care about what they have to say.

After the initial hearing aid fitting, a patient should plan on spending several visits during the trial period adjusting the aids. Success with hearing aids is a dynamic process best achieved through these visits where you can share your successes and failures in hearing. We listen to you and design a program of rehabilitation to meet your goals.

Trouble Hearing in Noise?

Often patients with significant hearing loss have the misconception that hearing aids solve the majority of their listening difficulties. The most advanced digital hearing aid technology, even with directional microphones, will not make sound more audible in situations where normal hearers have problems such as concerts, banquets, football games, houses of worship and even hearing soft speakers at a distance. In these situations, FM (frequency modulation) systems can bridge the gap hearing aids only partially solve.

People with normal hearing often experience difficulties in noise. Discrete personal communication devices can provide the extra edge needed to hear clearly in this situation. Our office provides this state of the art technology.

“The Third Ear”

Dr. Mark Ross, a hearing impaired audiologist coined the phrase “the third ear” to describe various assistive listening devices which can be used in conjunction with hearing aids or as stand alone devices. Third ears work to increase the desired signal, perhaps a TV or a spouse’s voice in a crowded restaurant, above the level of background sound. Our office specializes in providing patients the opportunity to learn about “third ear” technology. As one patient recently stated, “Without the FM system, I could never hear my wife at the Gator Basketball games. Using this system has brought back the conversation we missed. It’s been a marriage saver!”
